The Speed of Rainbow by Whatsapokemon The Speed of Rainbow by Whatsapokemon
Oooh, style refinement.

My thoughts on Rainbow Dash:
She's a little brash and impulsive. I have nothing against the girl, she really is sweet and loyal, even though she keeps up an air of distance. Certainly I am fond of her, maybe not as much as some of the other mane six, but she's proved to be an asset to the team and to her friends despite her shallowness (and indeed anti-intellectualism) . I don't know why she's so popular, she really does seem to be the "figurehead" for bronies, and I'm thinking it's probably because of the blue colouring, and 'awesome' lightning bolt cutie mark. Despite not being my favourite she certainly is okay in my books.

Edit: changed it to purple, woo.

This is great.

It's a departure from the other stuff you've done, and I really like it. It's got a cool new style, the lighting is great and the motion really feels... fast.

The angular shapes of the limbs and hooves are fantastic, but I feel like they're a little inconsistent throughout. The wings are completely rounded while the edges of the hooves—particularly on that back leg—are sharp and cornered; I'd like to have seen a similar effect on the feathers.

Speaking of the feathers, I really like the way you did them that's similar to the show style but also fitting to the sleeker look you have here. The number of inner feathers, though, I feel could be toned down; as it is it's a little busy and distracting from the rest of the picture.

The top segment of the nearest front leg is weirdly thick, I'd recommend making it skinnier.

The head is fantastic. It looks sleek, aerodynamic and determined. The muzzle looks wonderful, despite looking nothing like the ones you usually do. The eye looks sort of triangular and Pokémon-ey, something I'm a little mixed about but ultimately falls more to you.

Her mane on her head should be swept back more, since right now it looks kind of like a beret. If not swept back, have it poof farther upwards. You've also got a lot of spikes on the bottom portion of the neck-mane which also look rather busy.

The tail looks all right, but the base should be thinner.

The front edge of her vapor cone is uncomfortably close to the left edge of the picture. Actually, the whole thing is a little far to the left. I like the speed effect it gives it, but it also makes it feel cramped on that side.

The shading is excellent. I've got nothing to criticize here.

Great job, Whatsa! This is a seriously great looking piece, and I hope I see more of this from you.

Okay, first lengthy critique I've done for this site.

First and foremost, I'll explain the rather low originality score. It has nothing to do with this being fan art, otherwise I'm handicapping the site rating system from this critique's outset. It is merely the standard nature of the scenario this piece presents, namely Dash going fast. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad scenario, and it is a defining part of Dash's character, one that has been presented in countless other pieces. But that's just it: it's been presented in countless other pieces. My final point of that long ramble is that the action of this piece is rather standard, and therefore my originality score has to be rather average.

Now I can get to what really makes this piece as strong as it is. The description itself states this as a style refinement, and I buy that sentiment. Looking back on some of your previous works and contrasting it to this one, I can see the improvement that's been made, particularly contrast with colour hues. I especially enjoy the lighter blue Dash's coat has been made to the norm. It's not white in colour, but it is noticeably milder, and this makes the vibrancy of the rainbow of her mane and tail stand out more. I should also mention that I think your facial expressions have improved, as the emotion in this picture is quite subtle. Dash appears to be in sort of a general haze of pride as opposed to feeling directly smug about something in particular.

In terms of your technique, I can see both the improvement that's been made, and the room where it could be made still. Dash herself is rather well defined in the picture, and your outline of her isn't overly bold either. The shading that I've been seeing you experiment with in other pieces also pays off here, giving it some needed depth. Where I see room for improvement though, is the wind outlines. They seem too sketchy in comparison to the rest of the picture's elements. I understand that something like wind, which doesn't have nearly as defined a shape as a living being, would be difficult to draw definitively but, along with your backgrounds, I still can't help but think it could be improved.

Overall, I think you did a great job. Yes, my gripes about originality still stand, but those things are by no means my only determining factors for my enjoyment of art, and in the end originality wasn't the point of this piece. The final point of this work was to refine your style, and I think you did that here.

I don't think she's an anti-intellectual so much as she doesn't like waiting/plotting/activities that aren't physically active (aside from napping). She certainly values and listens to Twilight at the very least, but definitely is more of a, "Nike, just do it" type of pony.

Like the sort of person who'd use a computer or microwave without ever thinking of how it works perhaps?
