Drawing Ponies with Whatsapokemon, the basics by Whatsapokemon Drawing Ponies with Whatsapokemon, the basics by Whatsapokemon
A little tutorial I made for drawing basic ponies. It covers basic skeleton construction the way that I normally do it.

Please let me know if you have any ideas for improvements, or if there's something I didn't explain well enough.

Edit: There is now a flash version right [here]

I've always found all the shapes to be quite confusing but, the way you broke it down made it simple and easy to follow.

That's the idea :)
Almost everything can be broken down into really simple shapes, it's just a matter of finding what they are.
Once you know what they are you can just rearranged them and rotate them for different poses.

Real fantastic tutorial here. Definitely a handy tool especially considering I like your pony style :D

Thanks! I sure do hope it's able to help people. It's basically the process that I use explained rather poorly.

I also made a flash version which may be slightly more useful. [link]

You've no idea just how big a help you were with this. I've ALWAYS had issues with drawing ponies, and this really helps me set up a work process. Very useful, descriptive, and you even describe the proportions which is mighty nice.

I may end up stealing your artstyle for a tumblr I wanna start, but this is a damn fine tutorial. Much obliged, man.

Thanks, that's so nice of you to say. It is really gratifying to know that I actually helped someone. It's a method that's always done pretty well for me, even though there are definitely other ways people do it.

Hehe, you can use my style, all my style is is just "as close as I can get to show style". At least I think that's what I'm doing, I can never be sure.

It's certainly close, but has a much more cartoony style to it, almost like the Lunastuck tumblr. I've just gotta work on the legs a LOT more, and learn to be more liberal with the size of my drawings.

I've never noticed how hard it is to draw a straight line on a tablet...

Aww thanks, Egophiliac (who runs Woonastuck) is one of my favourite artists, so the art has certainly had an influence on me, even though I still have a long way to go before I get to her level.

I actually do have a specific leg tutorial, that you may have already seen. It explains them in much more detail than this basics guide. here: [link]

One thing you should do is practice drawing by moving the elbow rather than the wrist. Most of your movements should be from the elbow and it makes your lines longer and smoother. The wrist is only used for little details. It's hard to explain.

I did see your tutorial, and it makes sense, plenty. Just an issue of me drawing some shapes too small, having to erase constantly, and my damnably shaky wrist preventing me from drawing actually smooth lines.

I'll keep trying though.

No problem!

I just made a flash version too, which may be more useful. An animated GIF was a bad idea I think: [link]

Nah, you went at a good pace, in my opinion! Flash version is a teeny bit more helpful, though. c:

At first I thought it was a bit slow, but then I realized that I watching a draw-along tutorial. Excellent work!

I made a flash version to fix the slowness. A gif was probably not a good idea. [link]

Thanks! Your writing is tiny!

If you have any ideas for improvements I'd love to hear them. Sometimes explaining things like this is hard.

I'm so used to my tiny writing now. ;P

Maybe there could have been a small amount of additional info about changing muzzles and body shapes to suit colts and other shaped ponies etc? Just to make it a more all-rounded tutorial but it's just a suggestion, it's not really necessary. :)

Ah yes, that's a good idea. However I think that will need to come in a separate one, since those differences may confuse people if they're starting from the basics. Small bite-sized chunks might be a good way to explain things, if ya know what I mean.

Gender and age differences would certainly make a good topic for one of these though.

Yeah you're right. If you're willing to make more than one tutorial (which is great by the way) then I think the chunks is a good idea. Usually people don't like to make more than one tutorial but a series of these would really help people out. :)
